You don’t need to have your entire wedding planned the moment you get engaged—but having a clear vision will make every decision that follows so much easier. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed by inspiration overload or stuck trying to define your style, these three tips will help you move from “I don’t even know where to start” to “This is starting to feel like us.”

1. Start With How You Want It to Feel
Before you think about colors, flowers, or even a venue, ask yourself:
How do I want our wedding day to feel—for us and for our guests?
Do you want something intimate and romantic? Grand and festive? Relaxed and full of movement? Let the vibe lead the visuals. When you know how you want people to feel, it becomes much easier to reverse-engineer the details that support that.
2. Build a Visual Reference Point
Instead of hoarding 300 pins on Pinterest, challenge yourself to find 5-10 images that represent your actual aesthetic. These could be from weddings, but they don’t have to be—think fashion, interiors, art, even nature.
Notice patterns in color, texture, and mood. Do you keep saving outdoor dinners under string lights? Is everything you’re drawn to clean and minimal, or layered and lush?
This curated mood board will help your planner and vendor team understand your taste—and protect you from spiraling into comparison mode.
3. Focus on 3 Priority Areas First
Trying to design your entire wedding at once can get overwhelming fast. Instead, start by identifying your top three priorities—the elements you care about most.
Is it the guest experience? The food? The florals?
Once you know where to focus your energy (and budget), you’ll gain momentum and make decisions with more confidence and intention.
Pro tip: This is exactly where I use my Priority Planning Sheet with clients—it helps you align your vision with your budget from the very beginning.

Your wedding vision doesn’t need to be crystal clear from day one. It’s okay to start small—as long as you start with intention.
